HMRC to target doctors and dentists

Martin Herring

Berkshire-based Banks& Co Chartered Certified Accountants are warning that HM Revenue and Customs is to target approximately 2,500 doctors and dentists who they believe have avoided paying tax on their income.

The tax authority will issue letters in the next few weeks, requesting them to pay within 21 days or face possible prosecution through the courts.

Martin Herring, a director at the firm said: “The letters are part of the HMRC’s efforts to recover unpaid tax owed by members of various professions.

“It is understood that electricians and people selling on internet marketplaces will be targeted next year”.

As well as doctors and dentists, HMRC has already targeted the tax affairs of plumbers, private tutors, restaurant owners and scrap metal dealers, as well as those with offshore bank accounts.
